So, You Want to Play College Club Soccer?

If you're a high school student thinking about playing while in college or a current college student looking to play, you've come to the right place. I'm here to give you the lowdown on everything college club soccer – from what it is and why it's awesome to how you can land a spot on the team.

First things first, what exactly is college club soccer?

It's essentially a competitive level of soccer that exists outside of the NCAA system. Club teams are run by students and compete against other college club teams in tournaments across the region and country. It's a whole different ballgame compared to college soccer, but that's what makes it so unique and exciting.

Now, let's talk about the pros of playing club soccer in college.

For starters, you've got way more flexibility in terms of scheduling. You can balance your academics, social life, and soccer without the same level of pressure that comes with being on a college soccer team. Plus, club teams are all about giving everyone a chance to play and develop their skills, so you can expect plenty of playing time. And let's not forget the fun factor – club soccer is all about enjoying the game and building lifelong friendships with your teammates.

Of course, there are a few downsides to consider.

Club teams don't have the same level of structure and resources as varsity programs, which can be a challenge. You also won't get the same level of exposure to pro scouts and media that varsity players do. And since club teams are student-run, there can be some financial hurdles to navigate, like fundraising and player dues.

But hey, don't let that discourage you! If you're determined to play college club soccer, there are plenty of ways to make it happen. Start by researching teams at the schools you're interested in – check out their websites, social media, and online forums. When you get to campus, keep an eye out for tryout dates (usually at the beginning of the fall semester) and show up ready to impress with your skills and work ethic. And don't be shy about reaching out to the club coaches directly to express your interest and ask any questions you might have.

Now, I know what some of you might be thinking – don't you need to be recruited to play college soccer? Well, that's where club soccer is different. While varsity coaches might actively recruit players, club teams typically hold open tryouts that give everyone a fair shot. So, even if you haven't been scouted or recruited, you can still earn your spot on the team through hard work and dedication.

At the end of the day, college club soccer is an incredible opportunity to continue playing the game you love at a competitive level, all while making unforgettable memories and friendships along the way. It might not come with all the bells and whistles of varsity athletics, but that's part of what makes it so special.
