Concord University Director of Athletics Kevin Garrett has announced the hiring of Alex Smith as the new head coach of the men’s soccer program.

Smith, who is the third head coach in program history, is already familiar with the region having spent the 2022 season on the sidelines at Bluefield University in Bluefield, Virginia. The 2022 Rams went 7-9.

"I am humbled and appreciative to have been chosen to lead Concord University men’s soccer program by Director of Athletics Kevin Garret and the search committee,” Smith said.

“I would also like to extend a thank you to Concord University President Dr. Kendra Boggess. I understand that this position requires dedication, hard work, and a deep love and respect for the game, all of which I'm confident I can bring to Concord’s prestigious campus.”

Prior to his brief stint at Bluefield, Smith was the head women’s soccer coach at Maine-Fort Kent for two seasons where he compiled a record of 21-12-4 and led UMFK to the USCAA Division I Championship in 2019. The Bengals also played for the USCAA Division I Championship in 2021. In just three years, Smith coached eight NAIA All-Americans at Maine Fort Kent.

Other coaching stops for Smith include being the top assistant at Northwestern Ohio as well as serving as a graduate assistant at Union College in Kentucky—his alma mater.

“I’m looking forward to Alex being on the sidelines for the fall 2023 season and beyond,” Garrett said. “He’s had success as a head coach and he’s been part of successful programs at each coaching stop. His energy and work ethic was exactly what we were looking for during the coaching search.”

A standout player for Union in Barbourville, Kentucky from 2013-17, Smith helped the Bulldogs to a 69-27-10 record in five years. Among his accolades were an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American selection at the end of the 2014 season as well as being named the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Player of the Year the same season. He was a three-time all-conference selection in all. The Montego Bay, Jamaica native ranks fifth at Union in both goals (45) and points (97).

“I am eager to start this journey and that the soccer program will grow infinite memories in competition, and in the community,” Smith said. “Everyone here at Concord has an invaluable role to play in our program’s success, and I am confident that by working together, we can accomplish great things."

Smith graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and earned his masters degree in educational leadership from Union.
