Matt Cunningham joined Siena Men's Soccer as an Assistant Coach in August 2021.
The Saints completed their first consecutive eight-win seasons in seven years in 2022, beginning with an impressive 4-0-1 start to the year. The team's third straight MAAC postseason appearance was preceded by standout goalkeeper Greg Monroe's "Golden Glove" award as the league's top keeper, as well as four First Team All-MAAC and two Second Team All-MAAC selections. The program also boasted a program record 15 selections to the MAAC All-Academic Team, tying for the most honorees in the league.
During his first season with the team, Cunningham aided the Saints in thriving during the 2021 season. Siena posted nine wins for its most in a season since 2014 and finished fourth in the MAAC to earn the right to host a postseason match for only the second time in program history. Six Saints compiled a total of nine MAAC postseason honors to match the program record, highlighted by freshman Jacob Sandun Arachchige-Jensen being named the MAAC Rookie of the Year and becoming the first rookie in team history to earn a First Team All-MAAC nod. The team's seven-win improvement from the previous season featured 17 different point scorers, the most for the team since 2002.
"Matt is a great addition to our team," Head Coach Graciano Brito said upon Cunningham's hire. "He has college coaching experience, and will bring excitement and energy to our team, and is a motivated person who can help us build the program. He's also a local product who's been around the game for a long time in this area and will be a great asset in recruiting. He also brings knowledge and experience from the MAAC to our staff, having played in our conference."
Cunningham came to Loudonville after having served as the assistant men's soccer coach at nearby Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, New York during the 2020-21 school year. He also spent the previous three seasons from 2018-21 as an assistant varsity boy's soccer coach at Voorheesville High School, helping to lead the Blackbirds to Sectional and Regional Titles in 2019, as well as secure a place in the New York State Final Four. Cunningham has also been involved in the local club soccer scene, serving as an assistant coach with the Black Watch Premier Soccer Club from 2015-20.
No stranger to the MAAC, Cunningham was a member of the men's soccer program at Iona during college. A native of nearby Bethlehem, NY, he led Bethlehem Central High School to the 2005 Suburban Council Championship and an appearance in the Section 2 Finals.
A 2010 graduate from Iona with a bachelor's degree in mass communications, Cunningham holds a USSF Class "E" Coaching License, as well as diplomas from the United Soccer Coaches and The English Football Association.
