Todd Tumelty enters his 13th season as the head coach of the Montclair State men’s soccer program. The former Red Hawk has turned MSU into one of the top teams not only in the New Jersey Athletic Conference but, in all of Division III.

The all-time winningest coach in program history, Tumelty has guided MSU to five NJAC Championships during his tenure as well as 10 berths in the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship, including a Final Four appearance in 2011. His teams have reached the “Sweet 16” of the tournament on five occasions and have been to the “Elite 8” five times.

Named the 13th coach in program history in April 2011

Has led the Red Hawks to five NJAC Championships (’14, ’16, ’18, ‘19, '23)

Guided MSU to 10 NCAA Tournament appearances (’11, ’12, ’13, ’14, ‘15’, 16’, ’18, ‘19, '21, '23), including a Final Four berth in 2011 as well as five trips to the “Sweet 16” and “Elite 8” rounds.

Led the team to 12 NJAC Tournament appearances, including seven championship game trips.

Coached Montclair State to eight NJAC regular-season championships (’12, ’14, ’15, ’18, ’20, '21, '22, '23)

Named NJAC Coach of the Year five times (’14, ’18, '21, '22, '23)

Players have garnered 22 major awards from the NJAC

Has had 82  players earn All-NJAC honors

Coached 13 United Soccer Coaches Association Division III All-Americans.

Victory No. 50 – vs. New Jersey City, 4-1 (October 19, 2013)

Victory No. 100 – vs. Stockton, 3-0 (September 28, 2016)

Victory No. 175 - vs. Rowan, 2-1 (October 23, 2021)

Victory No. 200 - vs. NJCU, 4-1 (September 22, 2023)

Guided Montclair State to the NCAA Division III Final Four in his first season (2011)

Reached the Elite 8 of the NCAA Division III Tournament in each of his first three campaigns.

Averaging 15 victories per season since taking over the program.

One of two coaches in MSU history to reach the NCAA Tournament in each of their first six season (Norm Schoenig, baseball)

Became the all-time winningest coach on August 31, 2019 surpassing Brian Sentowski with his 140th career victory in a 7-0 win over St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn).

Graduated from Montclair State in 2007 with his degree in Physical Education

Played for the Red Hawks from 2003-06 and was a three-year starter as well as team captain.

Helped MSU the NJAC Championship in 2006, Montclair’s first in 17 years as well as the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship. Montclair State advanced to the “Sweet 16”, finished the year at 20-1-1, including a perfect 9-0 mark in conference play.

Named First-Team All-NJAC in 2006 and selected to the NSCAA Metro All-Region Second Team.

Spent the 2010 season as an assistant with the Red Hawk women’s team

Served as head coach of the Parsippany Predators U-16 Boys team leading the club to the President’s Cup semifinals in 2009.
