Devan Carrington was named The Andrew '78 and Margaret Paul Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Support, Development and Inclusion at Cornell in January 2022 after nearly a decade serving students in areas of residential life, including the past six on East Hill.
"I'm honored to take on this role and am anxious to get the work started," Carrington said. "I am excited about the idea of helping enrich the experience of our student athletes and to engage our coaches in dynamic conversations about belonging, identity development and inclusion."
In his new role, Carrington will be instrumental in supporting student-athlete growth in balancing their athletic and academic pursuits. He will collaborate with other administrators to consider appropriate department services for student-athletes, and then develop, implement, and manage several programs that address the needs of student-athletes and coaches with regard to their overall success, belonging and welfare. Additionally, he will serve as the department's principal link to university academic and other support services.
Carrington transitions into his new role after serving as Assistant Director for Housing and Residential Life since 2018 and three prior years as an area coordinator. With contacts at nearly every student-based service area at Cornell, he has played an instrumental role in helping guide students to success in various areas of life - in and out of the classroom.
He also has vast experience in diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, including serving as Assistant Director for Diversity Programs and Multicultural Affairs at Washington & Jefferson College. While there, Carrington developed training programs for students, staff and faculty revolving around topics such as social justice and cultural sensitivity, as well as facilitating multicultural competency and identity development programming. He also spent a year as a Residence Life Coordinator for Diversity Programs at W&J after graduation.
A 2011 graduate of Bridgewater State with a degree in Criminal Justice, he spent part of his career on the varsity football team. Carrington earned his Master's in Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration from Vermont in 2013. Carrington and his wife, Angelica, have two children.
