Greg Cathell just finished his fourth season at the helm of the women's soccer program at the University of the South in 2023, leading the Tigers to one of the most successful campaigns in program history. Cathell is the 11th head coach in the program's history since becoming an NCAA-sanctioned sport in 1988.

Sewanee won its second straight regular season SAA championship and claimed the program’s first-ever conference tournament title as well, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers defeated Hanover College, 2-0, for the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament victory before falling to second-ranked Washington University.

The club finished the 2023 season 14-2-4 overall with a perfect 7-0-0 mark in league play, surrendering just 13 total goals during the campaign and posting an 18-match unbeaten streak.

Eleven players earned All-SAA honors and Cathell was voted Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. Four players garnered All-Region accolades and Brianna Fee was voted a Third Team All-American at the conclusion of the year. Twenty-one student-athletes were named to the SAA Academic Honor Roll and Maggie O’Hare was recognized as a Third Team Scholar All-American by the United Soccer Coaches Association (USCA).

Sewanee claimed its second SAA regular season title in program history with a win over Centre College in 2022, defeating the Colonels for the first time in the regular season since 2014. The Tigers reached the conference tournament championship game for the second consecutive season but lost to Centre in penalties. The club finished the year ranked seventh in the region with an overall record of 13-4-2.

Eight players earned All-Conference honors, including Defensive Player of the Year, Kate Thomson, and Newcomer of the Year, Kylene Monaghan, while his peers voted Cathell as Coach of the Year. Three players garnered All-Region accolades as well and 24 athletes were named to the SAA Academic Honor Roll.

The 2021 squad finished the year 11-5-3 overall, defeating Centre in penalties on the road to reach the SAA Tournament championship for the first time in program history. The Tigers were ranked ninth in Region VI at the conclusion of the year, Cathell’s first full campaign with the program.

Five players earned All-SAA honors while two athletes garnered All-Region accolades, the first All-Region selections for the program since 2016. In the classroom, Sewanee set a program-record with 31 selections to the SAA Academic Honor Roll, and the team achieved the Team Academic Award from the USCA.

In Cathell’s first season with the Tigers, the program played one official game in 2020-21 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Cathell has registered an 87-44-20 career record in nine seasons as a collegiate head coach with stops at Centenary College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Sewanee.

Prior to his arrival at Sewanee, Cathell spent three seasons as head coach at Centenary College in Shreveport, La., posting a 29-21-3 record. The program recorded just 20 wins in its first five years in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) before his arrival. He coached 11 players to All-Conference accolades during his three seasons.

Cathell led the Ladies to their best finish in program history in the Division III era in 2019, registering a 16-3-0 mark with a 10th-place ranking in the United Soccer Coaches West Region poll. Additionally, the 16 wins tied a school record, also set in the 1995 and 1996 seasons. Migui Boldrin was named the SCAC Offensive Player of the Year and later earned All-America honors from the USCA.

Prior to his time in Shreveport, Cathell served as an assistant women's soccer coach at Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y., an NCAA Division I program. During the 2016 season, he coached seven All-Conference players as well as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year. The team posted a 9-7-3 record and a No. 2 seed in the MAAC Tournament, earning the highest seed for the program in 12 seasons.

For the 2014 and 2015 seasons, Cathell served as the head women's soccer coach at NCAA Division III Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. His teams excelled both on-and-off the pitch, as the Engineers boasted a 19-12-8 record in two seasons. His squads also received the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Academic Award both years and he coached the first women's soccer Athletic and Academic All-American at Rensselaer.

He worked four years as the assistant women's soccer coach and head recruiting coordinator at NCAA Division III Salisbury University in Salisbury, Md., helping recruit a freshmen class that posted a combined 34-17-6 over three seasons, including two regular season Capital Athletic Conference championships and two trips to the CAC Tournament championship game with one CAC Tournament title and one NCAA Tournament appearance.

Cathell also recruited and coached the first Seagulls women's soccer player to earn CAC Rookie of the Year accolades.

From 2003-08, he coached soccer at Delmar High School in Delmar, Del., with stints as both the boys and girls head coach. In 2008, he garnered both the State of Delaware Coach and Small School Coach of the Year honors.

Cathell played college baseball at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore (UMES) and was named All-Conference in 2003 and to the All-Tournament Team in 2006.

He graduated from UMES in 2009 with a bachelor’s in Secondary Education with a Social Studies concentration. He received a master’s in Education/Post-Secondary Education from Salisbury in December 2012.

Cathell holds a national coaching diploma and advanced regional coaching diploma from the USCA.

He is married to the former Mia Weber from Delmar, Md., and the couple has four children – Hope, Ty, Eli and Faith.
