John Maio, who is the owner, founder and head trainer of New York Sport & Fitness, became the first-ever Head Strength & Conditioning Coach in the College’s storied history in the fall of 2019. Maio brings to Elmira a wealth of knowledge and experience that ranges from his time as a high school strength and conditioning coach to working individually with college-bound athletes to prepare them for the rigors collegiate athletics.

His professional career began as a Fitness Trainer at Club Nautilus in 2000, where he stayed for four years. Maio’s coaching career started in 2003 at Elmira Notre Dame High School as the Varsity Assistant Football Coach and Strength and Conditioning Coach.

In 2005, Maio began his journey in the business world by opening New York Sport & Fitness, located in the heart of downtown Elmira at 134 West Water Street. The overwhelmingly positive and successful nature of the business resulted in Maio opening a second location just a few short miles away from the Murray Athletic Center in Horseheads.

A graduate of Mansfield University, Maio obtained a Bachelor of Science in Health Science during his time with the Mountaineers, before acquiring a Master’s in Health Education from SUNY Cortland. Maio is certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). He also possesses Level 2 certifications as a Functional Strength Coach (CFSC), as well as Functional Movement Screen (FMS). Additionally, he has obtained certifications in Exercise Nutrition and Spinning Instruction.

Maio’s ties to the community cannot be understated. In addition to his involvement with Notre Dame High School, Maio is a founding member of the Joel Stephens Foundation, which raises and donates thousands of dollars annually to the charity.

He resides in West Elmira with his wife, Heather, and three children, Evalynn, Roman and Rocco.
