John Moening is in his second season as an assistant coach for the St. Olaf women's soccer program in 2023-24 and works primarily with the team's goalkeepers.

In his first season at St. Olaf, Moening was part of a coaching staff that led the Oles to a 10-7-1 (.583) overall record and a 7-3-1 (.682) mark in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) in 2022. The 10 wins matched the program's most since 2010 and the seven MIAC victories were tied for the most in program history. St. Olaf claimed its first-ever victory in the MIAC Playoffs with a quarterfinal win over Saint Mary's.

In 2022, St. Olaf had 10 Academic All-MIAC honorees, one United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-Region honoree, one United Soccer Coaches All-Region selection, three College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District honorees, three All-MIAC selections (including the league's co-Rookie of the Year), and one Honorable Mention All-MIAC selection.

Moening came to St. Olaf after serving as the goalkeeper coach for the men's and women's programs at Hamline University from 2018-21. While at Hamline, he coached 2018 Honorable Mention All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) honoree Dean Isaacson.

Since October 2010, Moening has worked as a goalkeeper coach and director of Keliix Intra Soccer Club, running the goalkeeper program for all ages at the club. He has also served as the goalkeeper coach for TFE/Fusion Soccer Club since June 2016, running training sessions for ages U11-U18.

Prior to his time at Hamline, Moening was the goalkeeper coach for the girls teams at Minneapolis South and Minneapolis Washburn High Schools from 2014-20 and The Blake School from 2020-21.
