Robertson, before arriving on the Forty Acres in February 2024, spent the 2023 campaign as an assistant coach on Erica Demers' coaching staff at the University of Cincinnati, which advanced to the second round of the 2023 Sprouts Farmers Market Big 12 Soccer Championships.

Prior to his arrival at Cincinnati, Robertson helped UAB to a 28-26-15 record with 16 all-conference honorees during his time in the Magic City. In his final season in Birmingham in 2022, the Blazers featured a program-best 10-match unbeaten streak and featured a league-best six All-Conference USA selections that was highlighted by the conference's Defensive Player of the Year in Asha Zuniga. He also worked with Kelsey Daughtery during her time at UAB as she went on to become a Conference-USA Goalkeeper of the Year. 

Robertson returned to his alma mater (Maryville College) in 2016 to help guide the program to its first ever USA South regular season and conference tournament championship. The season resulted in an 18-3 record and an appearance in the NCAA DIII tournament for the first time since 2005. Three years later, he helped the University of Montevallo earn its first NCAA DII tournament appearance in 12 years. 

The Fyvie, Scotland native graduated from Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn., where he was a two-time all-conference selection and a team captain, with a Bachelor of English Literature in 2013. Prior to graduating, he helped lead the Scots to three consecutive Great South Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships (2009-11), while also being named to the 2011 All-Great South First Team and 2012 All-USA South Athletic Conference. 

In 2015, he returned to the United Kingdom to earn a Master of Journalism from Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland. 

Robertson has a wife, Rachel.
