Justin McIlwee was named the Director of Athletic Communications for Eastern Mennonite in August, 2021. “I want to thank Director of Athletics Dave King for the opportunity to be part of the Royals athletics department,” he said. “Having taught and coached in Rockingham County for five years, I’ve seen firsthand the impact Eastern Mennonite University has on its students, and on the community. They not only put high quality teams out in competition, they produce high quality individuals after graduation. I am very thankful for my time at Hollins University and am looking forward to coming to EMU and living up to the high expectations all the coaches put forward.”Prior to joining the Royals, he was the Director of Athletic Communications for ODAC-colleague Hollins University for two years. During his time in Roanoke, McIlwee was the main communication point for all 10 varsity sports on the Hollins campus. He was in charge of the day-to-day workings of the Hollins sports website, the athletics social media accounts as well as all media and statistics. He was in charge of HU's website redesign, switching from Presto to SIDEARM in the summer of 2020. In 2018, McIlwee was named the Assistant Director of Athletic Communications at Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss. He was the main contact for volleyball, men's soccer, XC, SAA Champion women's basketball, men's and women's track and field and softball, as well as the secondary contact for Majors football. No stranger to the Shenandoah Valley, he is an alumnus of nearby James Madison University. McIlwee has master’s degrees in secondary education from JMU and sports journalism from Indiana University-Purdue University of Indianapolis. He also spent time as a sports editor for the Hopewell News and News Patriot in Hopewell, Va., after his teaching career.McIlwee is a member of CoSIDA and is on the Job Seekers Committee and is a part of EAST-COMM and on the Rookie Committee. He was also part of the official stat crew of the 2021 NCAA DIII Men's Volleyball Championship. He currently lives in Broadway with his wife, Morgan, and their two dogs, Tango and Kenobi.
