Kate (Clawson) Velys joined Stony Brook Athletics in February 2019. She serves as an academic advisor for men's basketball, men's soccer, women's soccer and women's lacrosse and coordinates tutoring in the academic center. She was promoted to director of academic success in February 2021.

Velys also serves on the HOPE committee to raise awareness of mental health/suicide prevention efforts campus-wide as well as on the Student Orientation Office's Communications and Assessment Committee.

Velys earned a master of education in counseling from DePaul University in June 2018 while serving as a grad assistant advisor for the men's and women's cross country and track & field teams from 2015 through 2018.

She earned a bachelor of arts in media and communications from Muhlenberg College in 2013. At Muhlenberg, she was a four-year letterwinner and a 2012-13 all-conference selection with the women's basketball team.

She served as assistant to the commissioner of the New Jersey Athletic Conference from 2013 through '15.
