The Bearcat women’s soccer team earned the program’s second straight trip to the NCAA Div. II Tournament with another impressive 13-win season.

Head coach Marc Gordon guided the Bearcats to a school-record tying 13 victories. Northwest went 8-3 in league matches to tie for the most MIAA wins with the 2021 squad.

Northwest won its final seven matches of the regular season to secure an outright third-place finish in the MIAA. Northwest’s eighth straight win came against Washburn in the quarterfinals of the MIAA Tournament giving the Bearcats a new school record for consecutive victories. Northwest lost a tight 1-0 decision to Emporia State in the MIAA semifinals in Warrensburg, Mo.

The Bearcats earned a trip to Bemidji, Minn., for the first round of the NCAA Tournament and a matchup with No. 12-ranked Minnesota State. The Bearcats took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal from Caroline Sanders, but the Mavericks notched an equalizing goal in the second half. The teams would stay tied through two overtime periods and the victor would be determined in penalty kicks. Minnesota State advanced to the next round via a 3-1 edge in penalty kicks.

Northwest redshirt freshman Lily Ellis was named the MIAA Goalkeeper of the Year. Ellis set a school record with 13 shutouts and she ranked No. 3 in the nation with those 13 clean sheets. The Bearcats set a new school season record with 13 shutouts and 0.52 goals-against-average.

Senior Letycia Bonifacio earned the MIAA’s Co-Defensive Player of the Year award and her third first-team all-MIAA honor. She played a team-best 1,842 minutes and was a key piece of the defensive backbone of the Bearcat defensive effort.

Junior Kaylie Rock secured first-team all-MIAA status. Rock led the team in goals (6), assists (13), points (25), shots (62) and shots-on-goal (31).

The Bearcats has 18 squad members earn MIAA academic honors. Sophomore Maddie Taylor earned the distinguished Academic Excellence Award with a perfect 4.0 GPA in elementary education.

Gordon earned MIAA Co-Coach of the Year honors in 2021 after leading Northwest to record-breaking season. 

Gordon guided the Bearcats to the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance and a school-record 13 victories. Northwest drew MIAA-foe Emporia State in the first-round match in Emporia, Kan., and the Hornets were able to secure a 2-0 victory over the Bearcats.

Northwest set single-season school records in wins (13), MIAA wins (8), goals (41), assists (32), points (114) and shots on goal (163).

The Bearcat soccer earned the program’s highest-ever finish (third) in the MIAA with eight league victories. Northwest played its first home MIAA Tournament match and walked away with a resounding 5-0 shutout of the Washburn Ichabods.

Junior Letycia Bonifacio and sophomore Kaylie Rock tallied first-team all-MIAA honor. Bonifacio keyed the Northwest defensive approach in games, while Rock’s offensive efforts keyed the other end of the field for the Bearcats. Senior Madi McKeever came full circle with the Bearcat turnaround as she joined the program in 2017. McKeever was a key midfielder for the Bearcats and earned second-team all-MIAA status this fall. Sophomore forward Teagan Blackburn generated plenty of offense and earned third-team all-MIAA honors. A pair of redshirt freshmen netted honorable mention all-MIAA accolades in defender Sydney Mueller and forward Sophie Cissell. Mueller played lock-down defense, while Cissell drove the Bearcats with her offensive mindset that allowed her set the single-season assist record.

A trio of Bearcats earned 2021 United Soccer Coaches All-Central Region teams in Bonifacio, McKeever and Rock. Bonifacio tallied first-team status, while McKeever and Rock notched third-team honors.

Northwest’s 2021 season included a five-match win streak – the longest in-season streak in program history.

The Northwest women’s soccer team was able to play a spring 2021 season and tallied a winning mark at 4-3-1, which culminated in a three-match win streak. Gordon and the Bearcats began play with an exhibition at Minnesota State Feb. 20 and wrapped up competition at home in a 2-1 victory over Missouri Southern in the MIAA Spring Tournament. The highlight of the spring slate featured the program’s first-ever win in Warrensburg over Central Missouri, 5-4. Northwest had produced only three previous victories over UCM but all three had occurred in Maryville. Junior Letycia Bonifacio earned first-team all-MIAA honors, and sophomore Kaylie Rock secured second-team all-MIAA status in the spring. Northwest had 16 student-athletes earn MIAA all-academic status.

In 2019, Gordon led the Bearcats to their first MIAA Tournament appearance since 2012. It marked the third appearance for the Bearcats in the MIAA Tournament. Northwest scored 31 goals in 2019 exceeding its total of nine goals in Gordon's first season in 2018. Northwest came within four goals of tying the single-season school mark of goals of 35 set in the 2011 season. Northwest's 14 points in the 2019 MIAA team standings were also the most since scoring 20 points in the 2012 campaign. Northwest set its single-season assist record in 2018 with 29 assists -- the previous mark of 22 was set in 2006. Izzy Romano earned third-team all-MIAA recognition following the 2019 season.

 Gordon was hired as the third soccer head coach in Northwest Missouri State history on December 14, 2017. Gordon came to Northwest after serving as the Director of Soccer and head women's coach at Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kan., since 2010.

While at Ottawa, Gordon helped lead the Braves to three KCAC regular season titles and four conference tournament titles. In 2017, the Braves finished with an overall record of 17-4-1 and a KCAC record of 10-1-0. The team qualified for its sixth NAIA National Tournament and made back-to-back appearances at the NAIA Women's Soccer National Tournament Final Site. Eight Ottawa University student-athletes were named to the All-KCAC Teams. Caroline Jenkins was named KCAC Co-MVP and KCAC Offensive Player of the Year. Naysla Munoz earned KCAC Defensive Player of the Year. His 2016 team went 19-3-1 overall and won the KCAC regular season and tournament titles. The Braves advanced to the program's first NAIA National Tournament Final 16. Gordon is a three-time KCAC Coach of the Year and was the 2016 Regional Coach of the Year.

In eight seasons at OU, Gordon compiled a 113-38-15 record and a 65-7-5 KCAC mark. His teams had at least 10 victories each season and tallied 19 victories in 2016, winning the KCAC regular season and tournament titles. There have been 30 All-KCAC first team performers under Gordon. He coached seven Defensive Players of the Year, two Offensive Players of the Year, one Freshman of the Year and one Goalkeeper of the Year. Three players have also earned four combined NAIA All-America honors since 2014. Gordon also served as the Associate Director of Athletics and taught classes.

Prior to his time at Ottawa, Gordon was a head coach with the Pride Soccer Club in Colorado Springs, Colo. He was there from 2003-10, working with youth programs from ages 8-18.

From 2002-03, Gordon served as the Athletics Director and men's soccer coach at Holy Names University in Oakland, Calif. He helped start the men's program in 2002 and compiled a 20-11-1 overall record.

Gordon helped start the Bethany College men's soccer team in 1992 and the women's program in 1993. While in Lindsborg, Kan., he served as the university's Assistant Athletic Director, Associate Intramural Director and Resident Hall Director. The men's team had 47 All-KCAC performers, 11 all-district honorees and seven all-region players. He also had eight student-athletes named Academic All-America selections and four earned All-America honors. He made the playoffs seven times with one conference championship. He was the 1993 and 1999 KCAC Coach of the Year.

Gordon graduated from St. Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City, Kan., where he was a four-year all-conference performer. He was named an all-district, all-area and All-America honorable mention performer. He earned his master's degree in Sport Management/Administration from the United State Sports Academy. He holds multiple licenses with the United States Soccer Federation and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

He and his wife, Sonya, have a son, Owen, and a daughter, Darrian.
