Matt Freibaum joined the staff of American University women's soccer as an assistant coach before the 2021 fall season, and was named Director of Player Development in 2023.

In his time at AU, Freibaum has helped to coach three All-Patriot League award winners in Tate Jordan (2021), Asia Horne (2021, 2022) and Izzy Kadzban (2022,2023). While assistant coach Katie Greenberg was on maternity leave in the spring of 2023, Freibaum took over as Interim Recruiting Coordinator and led the charge in recruiting the Eagles' incoming 2024 class.

He works directly with the attacking unit and oversaw a dramatic improvement in offensive production in 2021. He helped Jordan elevate her game as a senior as she finished with five goals and three assists for 13 points after having only one goal through her first three seasons.

Prior to his time at AU, Freibaum spent the previous two seasons at Wofford.

During his time at Wofford, he oversaw all aspects of the program and served as lead recruiter, bringing in two players who earned spots on the 2021 Southern Conference All-Freshman Team. His work with the attacking players saw Wofford’s scoring output double from 2019 to spring 2021.

A native of Mount Airy, Md., Freibaum spent the 2018 season as an assistant for the men’s soccer program at Stevenson, helping guide the team to a 12-9-1 overall record.

In his playing days, Freibaum was a three-year starter at York College. A forward for the Spartans, Freibaum was named Second Team All-Conference as a senior after leading the team with 17 points on five goals and seven assists. He also spent his first two collegiate seasons at Virginia Commonwealth University.
