Matthew Gess was named the Director of Marketing for the USF Athletics Department in June 2023.

Gess is a Tampa native and has been involved in sports in some capacity for most of his life. He attended the University of Tampa where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management.  He would later return to help with the university’s baseball team as an assistant coach for a couple of seasons.

Before USF, Matthew worked for the New York Yankees minor league organization, the Tampa Yankees, which would eventually evolve into the Tampa Tarpons. Matthew worked for the Yankees for over 10 years. He started as an intern which developed into a marketing position with the organization after college. Matt later became the Assistant General Manager of the Tampa Yankees for eight years, eventually leading him to the role as General Manager for his remaining time with the minor league franchise.

Matt and his wife, Rachel, a USF Alumni, reside in Tampa with their boys, Lucas and Tucker.
