Bill Swartz has been the men's soccer coach at Pomona-Pitzer for 36 years, since first taking over the helm in 1986, and has led the Sagehens to seven SCIAC titles. Recently, he led Pomona-Pitzer to a SCIAC championship in 2012, took a sabbatical in 2013 to coach with the Tottenham Hotspur organization in England, and returned in 2014 to lead the Sagehens to a SCIAC Postseason Tournament title and an NCAA Tournament bid, while earning the league Coach of the Year honors.
During his 36 years as the head coach of the Sagehens, Swartz's programs have been a model of consistency. Pomona-Pitzer has reached 10 wins or more 18 times in that span, and has finished .500 or better 24 times. His career record now stands at 410-270-37 after bringing in a record of 76-30-6 from Thomas College.
Swartz quickly built the program up after taking over the helm in 1986. After losing seasons in two of his first three years, he led the Sagehens to a second-place finish in the SCIAC in 1989 and a league championship in 1990. From 1996-2006, his teams won nearly twice as many games as they lost, going 132-69-7 in that span, while winning four SCIAC titles.
In 2009, Swartz guided the Sagehens to a 13-4-2 overall record and a first-place finish in the SCIAC with an 11-1-2 conference mark, the best league record of his career. He added another first-place finish in the SCIAC in 2012, guiding Pomona-Pitzer to a 13-2-1 league mark (14-5-1) overall, and an 11-game winning streak, the program's longest since the 1973 team won 14 in a row.
Swartz joined Pomona-Pitzer after coaching at Thomas College, where he was named the New England Coach of the Year in 1985. He was also named the Far West Coach of the Year in 1990 with the Sagehens. Swartz has served as the Midwest and Far West Region Soccer Chair, as well as the SCIAC men's soccer chair.
Swartz graduated from Southern Connecticut State University with a history degree, and completed his MBA at Thomas College in 1986.
While with Tottenham in 2013, Swartz served as the Academy Development Officer and worked with the Spurs youth program (coaching 12-21 year olds), as well as supporting the scholar division (17-21 years of age) in their development beyond soccer. He served in an advisory role to younger members of the coaching staff, and conducted coaching research through Tottenham's performance analysis department.
