Claine Plummer joined the UC Santa Barbara Men’s Soccer staff in July 2023, bringing over 20 years of experience coaching goalkeepers from the youth to professional levels.

In the last decade, he has coached goalkeepers for three professional sides and two national teams, most recently serving as the Goalkeeper Coach for the United States Men’s U19 and U14 National Teams. He previously served in the same role for Los Angeles Galaxy II (2017-2022), Real Salt Lake Academy (2016-2017), and the Jamaican National Team (2015-2017). From 2013-2016, Plummer was the Goalkeeper Coach at Chivas USA, working with Tim Melia, who went on to become Sporting Kansas City’s all-time winningest goalkeeper, as well as UC Santa Barbara’s all-time winningest ‘keeper, Dan Kennedy.

Prior to his work in the pros, Plummer was the Goalkeepers Coach at his alma mater, Cal State L.A. from 2009-2013, helping the Golden Eagles’ men’s and women’s teams both earn spots in the NCAA Division II national rankings. In 2011, both the men’s and women’s sides earned California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships en route to NCAA West Regional Championship appearances. The men’s side won the regional crown.

Plummer also served as Goalkeeper Coach for UCLA Women’s Soccer from 2006-2008, helping the Bruins reach the NCAA Tournament Semifinals each year. His first collegiate coaching job was as an Assistant Coach at Occidental College, and his career also includes coaching stints at San Francis and Marshall Fundamental High Schools.

A native of Costa Rica, Plummer came to the United States to play collegiate soccer, having a stellar career in goal for Cal State L.A. from 1994-1997. He earned All-CCAA First Team honors in 1994 and has the second-most career saves in Cal State L.A. program history, with 248. He also ranks sixth in Golden Eagles history with a 1.50 career goals against average. He graduated with his Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies in 1998 and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Educational Foundations at Cal State L.A.

Plummer holds an Advance National Goalkeeper Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), and is an NSCAA National Coaching Instructor. Since 2006, he has worked as an NSCAA Goalkeeper Coaches Instructor, training coaches on the state, regional, national, and advanced levels. Since 2016, he has also served as a FIFA/CONCACAF Goalkeeper Instructor for the region of North America.
