The 2023 season marks Michael Meachum's sixth season in charge of the Midwestern State men's soccer program after taking the reigns in 2018. Prior to becoming head coach, he served as assistant coach under Doug Elder for seven seasons.
In his fifth season as the head coach at Midwestern State, Meachum led the Mustangs to a 13-6-3 record overall. MSU finished with a 4-5 record in the Lone Star Conference and was seeded No. 6 in the LSC Men’s Soccer Championship Tournament. Midwestern State won its third title in the past four seasons with a 2-0 victory over Oklahoma Christian in the final. The Mustangs reached the second round of the NCAA Division II tournament. MSU was ranked No. 18 in the United Soccer Coaches’ Poll. Mere Escobar earned D2CCA second-team honors and garnered third-team All-America honors from the United Soccer Coaches. Escobar became the sixth player in MSU men's soccer program history to garner All-America accolades from both organizations.
The Mustangs registered a 16-3-1 record in the 2021 season, going 7-1-0 in Lone Star Conference play winning the league's regular season and postseason tournament championships. As the No. 1 seed in the South Central Region, Midwestern State earned a first round bye for the NCAA postseason tournament. The Mustangs fell in the second round to Cal Poly Pomona. Meachum helped forward Trevor Amann to All-American honors with a D2CCA first team and United Soccer Coaches second team accolades. MSU finished the year ranked 22nd in the United Soccer Coaches Poll.
MSU amassed a 7-3-1 record in a shortened spring season in 2021. The Mustangs claimed a runner-up finish in LSC play posting a 5-2-1 league record falling in the finals of the postseason tournament. The Mustangs concluded the year ranked 22nd in the United Soccer Coaches Poll.
Midwestern State posted a 16-5-0 mark in 2019 en route to a Lone Star Conference Postseason Title and the club's seventh-straight NCAA postseason appearance. The Mustangs blanked seventh seeded UC San Diego 1-0 in the Opening Round before falling to second seeded Cal State, Los Angeles 3-0 in the Second Round.
In 2018, MSU Texas ran its unbeaten streak to 35 matches, the fourth longest in NCAA Division II history, and advanced to its sixth-straight NCAA postseason with a 16-1-3 record and a Heartland Conference championship. Meachum coached a pair of D2CCA All-Americans in junior Rory O'Keeffe and sophomore Taylor Lampe as the Maroon and Gold begin the 2019 campaign with a seven-match unbeaten streak.
In seven seasons as an assistant with the Mustangs, Meachum has helped lead the program to six NCAA Tournament appearances and a 103-19-13 (.811) mark.
MSU enjoyed its first unbeaten season in program history in 2017 advancing to the national quarterfinal round of the seventh time in program history before bowing to Cal Poly Pomona in 6-5 in penalty kicks. The Mustangs closed the campaign with a 20-0-1 mark claiming a second consecutive Heartland Conference title.
The Mustangs posted another banner season in 2016 following their sixth trip to the national quarterfinals in program history and first since the 2010 season.
En route to an 18-4-1 overall record, Meachum helped guide the Mustangs to claim the Heartland Conference regular season title with a 13-1-0 mark in their first season in the league. In the NCAA Tournament, MSU squared off against No. 15 Colorado Mesa for the third-straight season before cutting the Mavericks’ postseason run short with a 1-0 victory behind a strike from Christian Okeke in the 89th minute. The Mustangs followed with a 3-2 upset of the region’s top-ranked team in No. 7 St. Edward’s (Texas) in the NCAA South Central Region final at Triton Soccer Stadium in La Jolla, Calif.
In 2015, Meachum helped the Mustangs record their best winning percentage (.921) in school history with a 17-1-1 mark while posting their third undefeated regular season in the program’s 45 years with a 16-0-1 record.
MSU earned a No. 1 national ranking from the NSCAA for just the fifth time in program history on Oct. 6, 2015 following a 7-0-1 start to the season. Midwestern ranked inside the top 10 in every NSCAA regular season poll and appeared in the top five nine times during the 2015 campaign.
The Mustangs claimed their third No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament last season, hosting the first three rounds of the postseason at MSU Soccer Field. Midwestern opened up tournament play with a 4-2 win over Colorado Mesa in the NCAA second round before suffering a 4-3 overtime defeat to No. 8 Colorado Mines in the NCAA Sweet 16.
The Mustangs shook off a 1-3 start to ride a 13-match unbeaten streak back into the NCAA Division II postseason field in 2013. MSU defeated Colorado Mines, 1-0, before falling to Regis (Colo.) in the South Central Region championship game to finish the season with a 12-4-2 mark.
MSU returned to the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight season in 2014 with a 13-3-2 regular season mark before falling to Colorado Mesa in the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs to end the season at 13-4-2.
In Meachum's first season, MSU rallied to win its last seven regular season matches to secure a sixth-straight postseason berth in 2011 finishing the campaign with a 13-4-1 mark.
Prior to arriving at MSU, Meachum served three seasons as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator at Division I Oral Roberts.
He assisted in all aspects of the Golden Eagles' program, including training and conditioning, recruiting, game operations and management, alumni relations and community service projects.
In addition to his duties at ORU, Meachum served on the Oklahoma State Olympic Development Program where he served as the '92 boys' ODP coach that qualified for the 2008 Region III championships. In 2009, he took over the '94 boys' group and also coached the '99 boys' side.
Meachum spent two seasons (2006-07) with the Northeastern State (Okla.) men's soccer staff, where helped the 2006 Redmen obtain a national ranking for most of the season.
Prior to Northeastern State, Meachum spent the 2004 and 2005 seasons as the top assistant at Hastings College, where he helped the Broncos reach the 2005 NAIA Division I Final Four and capture back-to-back Great Plains Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships.
Before Hastings, Meachum started his collegiate coaching career at his alma mater - Bethany College - where he served as assistant men's soccer coach in 2003. His recruiting class won the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference title in 2004.
Meachum has shown a penchant for recruiting mixing talent from across Texas adding the diversity with international flavor resulting in 15 United Soccer Coaches' All-Americans, eight D2CCA All-Americans, 28 USC all-region selections, 27 D2CCA all-region performers and 18 all-conference picks.
Playing Career
Meachum enjoyed a standout collegiate playing career while starting 79 of 83 games at Bethany College where he was a four-time All-Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) performer earning first-team honors on three occasions beginning his career as the league's freshman of the year.
A native of Dallas, Meachum earned his bachelor's degree of Health and Physical Education from Bethany College in the spring of 2003 and went on to receive a master's degree in Kinesiology from Northeastern State in 2008.
Meachum holds an "A" license from the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) and belongs to the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America (NSCAA).
Personal
Meachum married the former Meagan Scott in 2007. The couple are the proud parents of two daughters - Hadley and Hayden. The family resides in Wichita Falls.
