On August 8th, 2023, Rob Berkowitz announced that he has stepped down as head coach of the ESU men's and women's soccer programs and will assume the role of volunteer assistant coach for both teams. Berkowitz totaled a record of 78-95-22 while at the helm of the men's program, leading ESU to its 20th PSAC Championship and 24th NCAA Tournament in 2017.
Rob Berkowitz concluded his 11th season as the head men’s soccer coach at East Stroudsburg University in 2022. He also completed his 15th season as the head coach of the Warriors' women's soccer program.
Under Berkowitz in 2022, ESU posted an 8-9-3 record, with a 7-3-2 record in conference action. ESU closed the regular strong with a 5-1-2 record in its final eight conference matches, to earn a berth into the PSAC Tournament. Hosting West Chester in the PSAC Semifinals, the Warriors advanced to the PSAC Semifinals with a thrilling penalty kick shootout over the Golden Rams. Four Warriors were selected to All-PSAC teams, including PSAC East Freshman of the Year Pieter Neerhof, Abdulla Nuredini (1st Team), Nathan Bradway (2nd Team) and Colby Raymond (2nd Team).
The Warriors tallied a 7-8-2 overall record and a 5-5-2 PSAC conference mark in 2021 after returning to competition following the canceled 2020 season. Five of ESU's eight losses came by just a single goal. The Warriors knocked off No. 22 Bloomsburg on Sept, 22, marking ESU's first win over a ranked team since 2011. Four Warriors earned All-PSAC honors during the 2021 season, with Juan Carlos, Lucas Marques and Colby Raymond earning first team accolades, while Bradley Turocy claimed All-PSAC East Second Team honors. Additionally, Raymond and Carlos earned CoSIDA All-Academic All-District, while Raymond and Marques both received D2CCA Atlantic Region Second Team honors. Raymond completed his first season in the Poconos by receiving all-region third team honors from United Soccer Coaches.
ESU won the 20th PSAC championship in team history in 2017, and the program advanced to the conference semifinals the following year after finishing 2018 with a record of 9-8-1 (6-5 PSAC). The Warriors knocked off Shippensburg on penalty kicks in the opening round before suffering a tight 1-0 defeat at top-seeded West Chester in the Final Four. The Warriros advanced to the PSAC Semifinals against eventual PSAC Champion and No. 2 Mercyhurst and fell, 3-1.
ESU ended 2017 with a final record of 14-4-2, its first PSAC tournament appearance since 2010 and its first NCAA appearance since 2008. Several Warriors were recognized for the program’s resurgence, highlighted by Keelby Espinola’s selection as PSAC Defender of the Year. Espinola led a total of six All-PSAC honorees (three on the first team). ESU also had four players named United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic Region and three named D2CCA All-Atlantic Region, while senior back James McMahon was honored as a CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree.
The Warriors clinched the PSAC title with a 1-0 win over Gannon on Nov. 5 after knocking off defending conference champions Mercyhurst (3-0) and top-seeded West Chester (0-0, 5-4 on PK’s) in the first two rounds. That advanced them to the NCAA tournament, where they fell 2-1 in double overtime in a second-round rematch at West Chester.
Berkowitz guided the team to nine shutouts in 20 games, with a total of only 17 goals allowed on the year. Offensively, ESU’s 46 goals were the most for the program in nine seasons.
ESU had posted identical 7-8-1 overall records in each of the previous two years before adding an additional six wins in 2017. The Warrior men’s soccer program ranks as one of the strongest all-time among PSAC institutions; ESU’s 20 PSAC championships are tied with Lock Haven for the most all-time in league history.
In addition to his men’s soccer responsibilities, Berkowitz completed his 13th year leading the women’s soccer program in 2019. ESU became the first school to win four-straight PSAC women’s soccer titles from 2014-17, and the Warriors returned to the Division II tournament for a sixth-straight year in 2019. Berkowitz set the program record for wins with a 1-0 victory over nationally-ranked Kutztown in October of 2016, and he enters 2019 with a lifetime mark of 163-81-26.
The 2015 women’s team won its first-ever NCAA Division II Atlantic Region championship, while Berkowitz was named both the PSAC and NSCAA DII Atlantic Region Coach of the Year in 2014 after leading the Warriors to a program-best 20-1-1 record. He was additionally honored as PSAC East Coach of the Year following his debut campaign in 2007.
Berkowitz was named the third head coach of the women's soccer program in April 2007 after spending seven years at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C. He was promoted to associate head coach in the summer of 2004, a position that he held for his final three seasons.
A native of Wantagh, N.Y., Berkowitz also served as the recruiting coordinator and the goalkeepers coach for the Runnin' Bulldogs Division I program.
Gardner-Webb's goalkeepers flourished under Berkowitz, as Hilary George and Edie Hering both finished their careers among the top three in career shutouts in the school record books. In 2001, George earned NSCAA All-America and All-Tournament honors after setting school records with 7.5 shutouts and a 0.81 goals against average.
Berkowitz was an assistant men's soccer coach at Averett University, a Division III institution in Danville, Va., from 1998-2000. He has also been the goalkeepers coach for the Gardner-Webb men's team, the head coach of the Greater Cleveland County Soccer Association U-18 Boys' Premier Team, and the director of coaching for GCCSA goalkeepers.
A 1997 graduate of LIU Southampton College, Berkowitz was a three-year starter for the nationally-ranked squad and was a team captain during his junior and senior seasons. He set school records for career wins and shutouts during his college career, and helped the Colonials to ECAC championships in 1994 and 1995. He also earned the Southampton College Scholar-Athlete Award as a senior. Berkowitz was a graduate assistant coach at LIU Southampton for the 1997 season.
Berkowitz graduated cum laude with departmental honors with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and Sports Marketing from LIU Southampton College. He also holds a Master's degree in Business Administration from Gardner-Webb University, which he earned in August 2006, and he has completed credit hours towards a Master's of Arts in Teaching from Averett University.Averett University.Averett University.
