Adrian Clewlow joined the VCU women's soccer staff in July 2023 after three years as Goalkeeper Coach at the University of Richmond under Marty Beall, and prior to that, he served as Goalkeeping Coach for the Richmond Kickers in the USL Championship and USL League One for seven seasons, and is the former Director of Goalkeeping for the Richmond Kickers Youth Soccer Club and Richmond United.
Clewlow will begin his second season working with the VCU goalkeepers heading into 2024.
From 2006-2014, he was a teacher and the Associate Dean of Students at the Winchendon School in Massachusetts, where he also served as the Assistant Athletic Director and the head varsity boy’s soccer coach.
He received a master’s degree in Sports Management from the United States Sports Academy in 2012 and holds a FA Youth Coaching Certification, NSCAA Director of Coaching Diploma, NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, NSCAA Advanced National Goalkeeping Diploma and is a USSF licensed coach.
Clewlow is no stranger to VCU Athletics, having been an assistant field hockey coach under both Dawn Hill and Shelly Behrens from 1999 - 2005, recruiting former standout goalkeeper and former Field Hockey Head Coach Laura Baker to the Black and Gold. Clewlow's sister, Mel, is a double Olympian in field hockey and made over 250 international appearances for England and Great Britain.
Originally from Dover, England, Clewlow played in the youth and academy teams for both Gillingham F.C. and Chelsea F.C. and also represented England at the U-18 schoolboy level, making his debut against Switzerland in Zurich. He attended the University of Richmond from 1995 - 1998, and was a two-time All-South Regional All-American selection in his final two seasons for the Richmond men’s soccer team, where he was a four-year starter and two-year captain for the Spiders. After earning CAA Rookie of the Year in 1995, he later led the team to victory in the 1998 CAA Championship. He received his bachelor’s degrees in Health and Sports Science at UR in 1998.
Following his collegiate career, he played professionally for the New Orleans Storm, Pittsburgh Riverhounds, and Richmond Kickers, followed by coaching stints at Randolph Macon College, Franklin Pierce University, and the University of Richmond.
