Jillian Shields originally joined the Cal State San Marcos women's soccer staff as Volunteer Assistant Goalkeeper Coach in August 2014 after an extensive club and collegiate playing career. She was later named of the program Assistant Women's Soccer Coaches in 2015 and began her second stint with the program in July 2021.

Shields attended San Diego State in 2005 and 2006 before transferring to Vanguard University, where she become one of the most decorated goalkeepers in the NAIA.

She was named a NSCAA All-America in her first season at Vanguard in 2007, when she also earned All-GSAC and all-region honors. Shields was honored as a NSCAA All-America honorable mention selection in 2009.

A 2005 graduate of Carlsbad High School, Shields was a four-year varsity letterwinner for the Lancers. She spent her club days playing for Carlsbad Lightning Premiere (1998-2004) and Southern California Blues (2004-06). She also competed with the CalSouth Olympic Development 87 Team from 1999-2002.
