Ken Prothero (Bucknell University '96) is in his 22nd year as the head women’s soccer coach and 24th as part of the women's soccer program.
Under Coach Prothero’s leadership, the Cavaliers have won 10 Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) and Atlantic East Conference crowns, including nine in the last 12 seasons. Prothero has amassed more than 200 victories on the Blue and White sideline, an average of 10 wins per season. The team has also taken 4 international trips.
In 2021, the No. 2 seeded Cabrini University women's soccer team claimed their second Atlantic East Conference title and third conference title in four seasons, thanks to a 1-0 penalty kick victory over No. 1 seeded Marywood University. Prothero also led the Blue and White to its 10th NCAA Tournament appearance. The Cavaliers finished the campaign 10-6-4, including 4-1-1 conference.
The Blue and White claimed its first AEC title in 2019 with a 2-0 victory at Marywood. Cabrini's 15-4-2 was sparked by a stingy defensive effort that surrendered just 14 goals all season, including a shutout streak of more than six games through the end of the regular season and the conference tournament.
In 2018, Prothero led the Blue and White to its ninth NCAA Tournament appearance, the program's first as an at-large participant. The Cavaliers finished the campaign 10-6-1, including 4-1-1 in the inaugural season of the Atlantic East Conference.
After a one year hiatus, Prothero returned the Cavaliers to the top of the conference in 2017, claiming the program's 10th CSAC title with a hard-fought 2-1 win at Marywood. The Blue and White finished the campaign with a 13-3-4 mark, the sixth season under Prothero that the team has amassed at least 12 wins.
Prothero and the Cavaliers entered the CSAC record book in 2015, becoming the first women's soccer team in league history to win five straight league titles. Senior Kaitlyn Cooper, the 2015 CSAC Player of the Year scored the lone goal ini the Cavaliers' 1-0 championship match victory over Gwynedd Mercy.
In 2014, the Blue and White closed the season with a 14-7 record and a league record 4th consecutive title. For the first time since 1999, the Lady Cavs went undefeated (11-0) in conference action. The team advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in program history. The Cavaliers boasted a 12-match unbeaten streak in route to the championship.
In just his second season at Cabrini in 2003, Prothero guided the Cavaliers to the conference title and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. He has been named the conference Coach of the Year in 2007, 2010, and 2014.
The program has also enjoyed four unforgettable cultural experiences to foreign countries. The Lady Cavs traveled to Brazil in 2008, Germany and Italy in 2010, Portugal in 2014, and South Africa in 2018. All four tours also included community service, matches against formidable opponents, and were planned by Coach Jess Huda, who has been an assistant for Prothero since she graduated Cabrini in 2001.
Prior to taking the reins as head coach at Cabrini in 2002, Prothero served two seasons (2000-01) as an assistant with the Cavaliers under Diane Pierangeli, who started the program in 1994. Leslie Danehy, former Cabrini Athletic Director and early mentor, was also an assistant coach with Prothero at the time.
Prior to arriving at Cabrini College, Prothero spent two seasons (1998-99) as an assistant coach and goalkeeper trainer with the men’s soccer program at Arcadia University with Tom Roller.
Before moving to the Philadelphia area, Prothero coached under Jake Mull with the girls’ program at Newton High School in Sussex County, NJ, Cosmos Soccer Camps with Pepe Pinton in Ramapo, NJ, and several EPYSA club teams with Scott Bonagura from Wallenpaupack High School.
Prothero got his start under legendary coach Marty Berman at The Pirate Soccer Camps in West Orange, NJ while still in college. Coach Berman, a senior staff member at FC Copa Academy and winner of over 300 matches at the helm of Seton Hall Prep, was a major influence on him as a player and in his development as a coach.
Since 2004, Prothero has been an active trainer and camp staff member with Coerver Coaching, one of the most well-known organizations in the world. This coaching method, started by the great Dutch coach Wiel Coerver, focuses on technical skill development, one-on-one moves, and small group tactics.
Prothero was a goalkeeper at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA. He graduated in 1996 with a degree in elementary education and a minor in computer science. He played soccer and baseball at Glen Ridge High School in northern New Jersey.
Prothero holds National, State, and Goalkeeper Level I & II Coaching Diplomas from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
Prothero is also a science teacher near Valley Forge National Park and lives a few miles down the road from Cabrini with his wife and two young children.
