Mervin Shade closed out his ninth year as an as assistant coach with the Adelphi University women's soccer team in 2023, working exclusively with the goalkeepers.

Over his eight years with the Panthers, he has seen two of his netminders earn NE10 Goalkeeper of the Year honors -- Anne Marie Ulliac in 2015 and Isabel Sandstrom in 2017.

Three Adelphi keepers (Anne Marie Ulliac, 2015; Sarah Hofmeier, 2018; Krista Aliscio, 2019) have also led the NE10 in goals-against average in Shade's eight years with the team.

Shade was a four-year starting keeper at Dowling College, where he earned Second Team All-NYCAC honors in 1998. In 2001, Shade was the ECAC Men's Player of the Year, First Team All-NYCAC and First Team All-Region, helping the team to an appearance in the Division II Final Four, with a nation-best goals-against average of 0.035.

Shade later served as a coach with the men's and women's teams at Dowling College from 2006-11. During that time, the men's team won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 2006. He also helped the men's team at Suffolk County Community College to an NJCAA National Championship in 2014.

A native of Trinidad who arrived in the United States at age 15, Shade is affiliated with numerous clubs on Long Island, including Massapequa, Smithtown, Farmingdale, Bayport and East Islip. He is also currently the Director of the MS Goalkeeping Academy, and holds United Soccer Coaches state, regional and national goalkeeping licenses.
