Head Coach Terry Davila will begin his 25th overall season at the helm of the Matadors' men's soccer program upon the start of the 2023 campaign.

A six-time Big West Men’s Soccer Coach of the Year, Davila has led CSUN to seven NCAA Tournament Appearances while producing 15 Major League Soccer draft picks in his tenure with the Matadors.

On Oct. 13, 2018, Davila became the all-time winningest coach at CSUN when the Matadors defeated Cal Poly 1-0. Davila surpassed Marwan Ass’ad (192), who he played for at CSUN. Davila won his 200th game of his career Oct. 9, 2019 when the Matadors defeated Cal State Fullerton 1-0.

He is 215-180-59 at the helm of the Matadors. Davila will begin the 2023 season 36th among active Division I head coach in wins. Davila is only 1-of-173 Division I Men's Soccer Coaches to win at least 200 matches in a career.

In 2022, CSUN earned a spot in the Big West Championship semifinals as the Matadors went 9-6-4. CSUN tied for second in the conference with a 5-3-1 record. David Diaz was selected Big West Freshman of the Year as Jamar Ricketts and AJ Johnson earned first-team All-Conference honors. Levin Gerhardt and Cooper Wenzel were named second-team All-Conference while Dylan Gonzalez was chosen honorable mention All-Conference and CSC Academic All-District. Five Matadors earned Academic-All-Conference honors.

The Matadors returned to the field in 2021 after a one-season sabbatical due to the COVID-19 pandemic and recorded a 4-13-1 mark. The Matadors' Giovanni Aguilar was named first team All-Conference and would be taken in the second round of the MLS SuperDraft by the Vancouver Whitecaps. Ricketts was named to the Big West All-Freshman team as eight Matadors were selected Academic All-Conference.

CSUN did not play in 2020 as the Big West canceled the season due to COVID-19 concerns. Despite not playing, Daniel Trejo became the second Matador to be taken in the first round of the MLS SuperDraft when he was taken 14th by LAFC.

The Matadors wrapped up 2019 with a 8-8-2 mark. CSUN advanced to the Big West Tournament semifinals as the No. 6 seed. Trejo was named Big West Conference Offensive Player of the Year, second team All-Region, and first team All-Conference. Trejo was selected as CSUN's Big West Scholar-Athlete. A total of five CSUN players earned All-Conference honors.

CSUN finished the 2018 season with a 9-8-1 record as seven Matadors earned All-Conference honors. Henrik Regitnig was chosen Big West Goalkeeper of the Year for the second year in a row. Trejo was selected first team All-Conference and was named second team United Soccer Coaches All-Far West Region.

2017 saw Davila lead CSUN to a second consecutive Big West South Division Championship and a semifinal appearance in the Big West Tournament. Regitnig was named Big West Goalkeeper of the Year while seven players earned All-Conference honors. Two players, Emmanuel Usen, Jr. and Darion Mealing were chosen third team All-Region.

In 2016, Davila guided the Matadors to the Big West South Division Title and Big West Tournament championship en route to earning a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Following the regular season, Davila was named the Big West Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his coaching career.

Under Davila’s watch, CSUN also has captured the 2003 and 2005 Big West Championships and then won the Big West Tournament title in 2012. The team also participated in the postseason in 2002, 2004 and 2013, hosting NCAA Tournament matches in 2005, 2012, 2013 and 2016. The Matadors advanced to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 in the 2005 tournament, defeating UC Santa Barbara at Matador Soccer Field in the Round of 32.

Among the Matadors to reach the top professional league in the United States (MLS) are former Matadors Sean Franklin, Rafael Garcia, Daniel Paladini, Joe Barton, Benjamin Benditson, Willie Sims, Chad Borak and Joe Franco. In the 2015 MLS Superdraft, the Matadors set a new program record by having two players (Sagi Lev-Ari and Edwin Rivas) selected in the same class.

In all, Davila has produced 27 United Soccer Coaches All-Far West Region selections and three All-Americans. In the Big West Conference, Davila’s student-athletes have captured four Big West Freshman of the Year, six Big West Goalkeepers of the Year, one Big West Midfielder of the Year, five Big West Defensive Players of the Year and two Big West Offensive Players of the Year. Davila’s student-athletes have also collected 49 first team All-Big West awards since moving into the league in 2001.

Davila has also created a family environment among CSUN men’s soccer by welcoming back former student-athletes into coaching jobs within the program. Former CSUN women’s soccer head coach Keith West played for CSUN and then became an assistant on the men’s program before taking over the women’s job full time in 2006. Former associate head coach Yossi Raz parlayed both his playing and coaching experience at CSUN into head coaching jobs at Cal Poly Pomona and UC Irvine.

Davila became the fourth head coach in the history of the men’s program when he succeeded Ass’ad in 1999. Davila ran both the men’s and women’s programs at CSUN during the 2004 and 2005 seasons. A former four-year starter for the Matadors, Davila spent three seasons (1995-97) as the top assistant under Ass’ad before taking over the head job.

Davila graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from CSUN in 1994. Davila and his wife Stephanie have two daughters, Jayden and Olivia, and one son, Devin.
