Phil Stevens returns to the coaching staff under second-year head coach Sarah Tompkins as a goalkeeper trainer, having graduated in 1998 with a double major in Physical Education and Sport and Leisure Management.
“Phil is a top-level goalkeeping coach," states Tompkins. "He brings an array of knowledge and experience to lead our goalkeeping department. Over the years, he has worked with some of the top goalkeeping coaches, including Dan Gaspar and Tony DiCicco. I look forward to working with Phil again this season.”
A Tolland native, Stevens was a four-year starter in goal for the men's soccer team between 1993 and 1996. In his career, the two-time team captain was a three-time team MVP, three-time recipient of the Leadership Award and the team’s senior Scholar-Athlete awardee.
As a senior in 1996, Stevens became the program’s only All-Little East Conference keeper in the first 16 seasons of conference play when he was named to the first team. That year, he led all LEC keepers in goals-against average (0.95), save percentage (.850) and shutouts (7.06).
Stevens left the program ranked as the program’s all-time leader in appearances (74), starts (63), minutes (7,360), and saves (623) and was second in shutouts (10) and goals-against average (1.20).
Stevens later directed goalkeeper camps all over the country through Dan Gaspar's Star Goalkeeper Academy.
After graduation, Stevens attended Division I Kent State University to complete his Master's Degree in Physical Education. While there, he also helped coach the Division 1 women's goalkeepers.
After graduating from Kent State, Stevens taught physical education in Willington for eight years, at which time he earned his Sixth Year Diploma in Educational Administration. After leaving Willington, Stevens worked in his hometown for three years as an assistant principal and was then hired in Willington as the elementary school principal, where he spent the next eight years. Since 2018, Stevens has served as Superintendent of Schools in Willington.
Stevens and wife Kristin have two children and and reside in Willington.
